Sony’s impressive Xperia Z2 is still awaiting a Z2 Compact variant, but that doesn’t mean we’re not already looking forward to the Xperia Z3 Compact, which will be Sony’s smaller version of the upcoming Xperia Z3 flagship, expected to make an appearance at IFA 2014.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact release date
First a big caveat: it is possible that a lot of the specs purportedly floating around for the Z3 Compact may turn out to be the Z2 Compact instead. This is because the rumors are pointing to both the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact being announced together at IFA 2014, when traditionally, flagship devices are launched with a window of several months before other variants start appearing and we haven’t yet seen the Z2 Compact. No matter which device these specs belong to, it will be making an appearance at IFA 2014 with market availability possibly within the month of September, if the launch of the Z1 Compact is anything to go by.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact price
When the Xperia Z1 Compact finally went on sale in the US, a full six months after it was announced, it was available unlocked for 549.99 USD via Sony’s US web store. While this price might seem hefty for a ”mini” device, it’s important to note that the compact phones released by Sony are not watered down versions like those offered by HTC, Samsung and others, but are full-spec’d flagships with smaller displays. Put in that perspective, a 550 USD price tag for a flagship that fits in your pocket easier isn’t so bad. Still, I wouldn’t expect the price to go up at all on the Z3 Compact.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact specs
The current specs doing the rounds for the Xperia Z3 Compact are a 4.6-inch screened device with a 20.7 MP Exmor RS sensor on the back – the same one we’ve seen on several Sony devices recently, including the Z1 Compact. Less concrete rumors include a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of on board storage. Design-wise, everything is as it should be with Sony’s Omnibalance design guidelines dictating a now very familiar style. As usual we have flaps over the microSD and micro USB charging ports, indicating the Z3 Compact will again be water- and dust-proof. There’s Sony’s dedicated camera shutter button, silver power button and magnetic charging connectors for Sony docks. Leaked CAD images indicate a footprint of 126.98 x 64.9 mm.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact rumors
One of the previous rumors claimed the Xperia Z3 Compact would feature a Full HD display rather than a HD one, as the latest rumors suggest. If the 4.6-inch diagonal is correct, then a 1080p display would cram in a very nice 479 ppi compared to a rather uninspiring 319 ppi on a HD display. Considering the Z1 Compact had a 720p display at 4.3 inches, it seems unlikely that Sony would want to water down the pixel density even further on the Z3 Compact. The screen will undoubtedly be a Sony Triluminos display, whatever density it comes in at.
